To Alaine, the girl next door, it was salvation from her overbearing, religious father. He was a devil. She was an angel. Two people who should’ve never met, let alone become friends, but it’s not until they give into the dangerous passion that’s been simmering under the surface for five years that things go to hell.
On the outside, Chuito ‘The Slayer’ Garcia is on top of the world. He’s successful. He’s wealthy. He's a champion MMA fighter surrounded by friends who support him, but they don’t know what he was before he came to Garnet.
Now his past is churning up demons he can’t ignore. Chuito knows he needs to go back to Miami to end it, but there's something holding him back, a single temptation he can't resist before leaving. She’s the one drug he can’t give up…even if it destroys them both. I don't even know where to start with Kele Moon 's The Slayer. Just.
damn. This book is intense. I read it in one day, and I resented each and every thing that took my time away from it. (Like, deeply resented.
There may have been yelling. Possibly.
) That's how good The Slayer is. In fact, I happened to read The Viper over a weekend, and it was so good I immediately ran to Moon's webpage and saw The Slayer was coming out and I went all I must have this book now. And it worked, so I'm sharing with you.
This is a really good book. There's so much going on yet the story doesn't get bogged down. Incredible. I've been thinking a lot about anti-heroes lately, interestingly stemming from some conversations back in 2010. And look at that, two of them found me.
While Chuito isn't a convicted felon, he might as well be. He's done all the crimes, just never been caught. He's just that good. And that dangerous. Chuito is warm, loving, kind, but also bad. If you're someone he loves, someone in his inner circle, he will literally die for you. He's that extreme.
In fact, his moral code has him putting himself on the line even for someone else's causes. Chuito is hardcore. The book would make an incredible television series. The romance is of course fantastic. Chuito and Alaine have been in love for five years, but it's forbidden (in Chuito's mind)—so he doesn't allow anything to happen. Alaine is the daughter of a preacher in a small town. Chuito is.
well, the blurb lays it out pretty clearly. He's someone much better in fiction than reality. However I think even people who gravitate towards “easier” romances would really enjoy Chuito and Alaine's story. The span from small town to Miami is in setting, but so much more. I liked that both characters had to grow and adapt to each other, and each place. Kele Moon has an excellent voice. Her writing is engaging and emotional.
I usually don't love a lot of flashbacks, but it works here for Chuito and Alaine's story. Additionally, while The Slayer can stand alone, in this case I recommend reading the other books.
Firstly, because they're all good, but secondly, it adds that much more to the book. (At the very least I recommend reading The Viper first, which is the one that directly precedes it in the Untamed Hearts series, which is a spinoff from the Battered Hearts series. ) As someone who is so vocal about missing the stand alone single titles, this is a big concession. In a way I almost loved the secondary characters more than the romance itself - which is saying something, because the longing and tension and push and pull between Chuito and Alaine is great. I mean they've been neighbors and in love but stuck for pretty much their entire adult lives. That being said, I adored Chuito's interaction with his best friend Tino, and Tino's brother Nova. It's magic.
It also shows Moon's skills in packing so much into the dialogue. There are some really dark moments in the book, and yet she manages to inject humor at the most unexpected moments to even things out. Like this gem:. “Nova hates the Russian mafia more than I do,” Tino went on as if he hadn’t heard Chuito. “Did you know they aren’t supposed to get married? What I can’t figure out is if they aren’t getting married, where the fuck do they keep coming from?”. “They don’t have kids?” Chuito asked in surprise. Most of the gangsters he knew had kids, and the Italians were worse than Latinos.
Never underestimate a predominately Catholic group of people’s abilities to reproduce more of the same. So you see, even when things get dark, quippy dialogue will make you laugh. It's crazy because most of the action takes place just within a few days, but then Chu and Alaine's story really begins the day they meet. The juxtaposition between the relationship developing for five years and then. well something like a Burn Notice season finale. There's enough action in The Slayer to satisfy even the most critical action movie lover, but also enough tender and sweet moments to fill a straight romantic movie.
There's also of course heat and chemistry to an insane level. Chuito first meets Alaine when she's 19. He (and the others) are with her through both her undergraduate and law degrees. I liked that Alaine had her own agency, and could have been okay without Chuito, but the two of them need each other. The emotion carries the book. The romantic love Alaine and Chuito have for each other, but also the love Chuito has for Tino, and the bond there of unbreakable friendship.
This is a book that will stay with me for a long time, and I know I'll be re-reading it. I already can't wait for the other books in the Untamed Hearts series, and think I might have to re-read the Battered Hearts books as well. Lime Cello, - A Little Bit Tart, A Little Bit Sweet.
